I'm stuck on this side of a river
that seperates me from you
I'd love to reach that other side,
I would if I could
but the current is wild
too wild to cross by boat
or attempt building bridges
The river's roar is loud enough
to swallow any scream from me
and help you not to notice.

I could spend half my life walking upstream
ever by your side, but still
quite far off
I'd reach a makeshift mess
a stone path, broken
slick opportunities
to jump across

I could try and fail
leaving myself washed ashore
a distant past of distance
between us
